What are the penalties for domestic assault?

A first time domestic assault not involving strangulation typically will be considered to be misdemeanor offenses, zero to 90 days in jail and/or a $1,000.00 fine. The problem with domestic assaults is that employers, background checking companies, colleges, universities, even some professions will not retain someone, will not hire somebody, will not allow that person to live in a particular apartment building if they have a domestic assault conviction because the public views it as a crime of violence. So it’s important to get that charge, if you can, get it dismissed. Don’t allow it to become a permanent criminal conviction because if you do it could cause problems for you in the future.
